“Trois” was composed for brass trio and commissioned by Jason Bergman, Brittany Lasch, and Denise Tryon of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Inspired by the endeavors of musicians I have only witnessed from afar, the trumpet, horn, and trombone exchange banter as the latter two instruments vie for the affections of the heralding siren voice. Through moments of pervasive uncertainty and fleeting joy, a sonic tapestry is woven that tells the story of unrequited love, jealousy, and ultimately triumph. But for whom? That is for the musicians and listener to decide.
